Republic Day 2023: Why is Republic Day of India celebrated on 26 January?

One of India's most significant national holidays is Republic Day. Every year, it is observed with much fanfare. The 74th anniversary of India's Republic Day is this year.

Since the constitution was adopted on January 26, this day is recognised as Republic Day. On January 26, 1950, the Indian Constitution went into effect, reaffirming India's status as a sovereign republic.

The date was chosen because the Indian National Congress unveiled Purna Swaraj on this day in 1930, rejecting the British Regime's Dominion status and announcing India's independence from colonial authority.
